I always try this but sometimes I come across as too mean.
Like I just want to crack jokes and make people laugh and not offend them but sometimes I just offend them.
Either that or people just do not get what I am saying.

Can you give me an example? Much tongue in cheek humor is about timing. Well…all humor really is about timing but in my experience wry or tongue in cheek seems more dependent upon it. Also being on topic is important.

Whenever my Girlfriend compliments, or comments in a complimentary way on another guy I sometimes do that tongue-to-cheek humor. She laughs and rolls her eyes.
