USDA = commercial breeder

They have pretty low standards of care, give multiple warnings and fines before EVER shutting someone down.

The likelihood they would let someone breed at all after shutting them down is slim to nil.

Edit: For the first poster- USDA is U S Dept of Agriculture-- and since dogs are livestock they fall under their jurisdiction.

Editx2: Yes, the puppymill would probably re-open somewhere else hidden and under another name.

USDA license dog breeders?

I thought the USDA only dealt with food or things we consume.
Are you trying to break into a new market?
Trying to add new meaning to the term, "Corn Dog?" :-)

Edit...
Animal_Artwork: Thanks for the info. I've been set straight and I learned something new! Big Thumbs up from me.

If the US Dept of Agriculture shuts down a PUPPY MILL type situation that an idiot is running, sure the IDIOT will try some other way to be a breeder again.
I hope they get caught, and the biggest ugliest horney inmate likes the way his Butt looks.

would a "hobby" breeder be the same as backyard breeder?
seems to me if a breeder is forced to shut down there must be a good reason for it.

BOXERS - thanks. i'd never heard the term before. and i think boxers are great too.

Holy SHT if the USDA shut you down the conditions must have been beyond deplorable.

Only puppy millers and mass production BYB'ers are USDA licensed.

My suggestion would be get all dogs spayed/neutered and find them homes that will care for them properly.

This makes me sick to imagine how awful conditions must have been to have USDA shut down your operation.

Chances are that if you decide to hobby breed you will go to jail which sounds like it might just be the place for you.

If your not the person who was shut down, then really you need to report the person that was shut down and is still breeding.

EDIT: ISIS, a hobby breeder is someone like me. I show, and occasionally breed boxers, i consider it a hobby because as with most other hobbies, it costs money, not many hobbies are profitable. Showing is my passion and i have occasional litters, maybe one every 3-5 years. So for me it is a hobby and not done for profit or financial gain

Why are you so intent on breeding dogs if you obviously cant take care of them.
Leave the breeding to those who really care about there dogs.
they arent a cash crop.

A USDA license is hardly a badge of quality. One probably could continue registering dogs with the AKC if the AKC hasn't banned them, but if your stock comes from a profit breeder, you shouldn't be breeding it. Dogs originating from profit-run enterprises are not bred for health, temperament or anything else except money.

Unless you're a big fan of handing over your paycheck to your vet, don't have anything to do with this kind of operation. Find your national breed club website and look at their members for a decent breeder who screens their dogs for health issues and screens prospective owners for responsibility issues.

If they get shut down, there was a dam good reason. There are so many homeless pets getting destroyed every year it's not even funny. Leave the breeding to the responsible breeder who breed for the good of the dog they have chosen. There is a slim line between puppy/kitten mils and anyone who would breed there dog just because it has papers.
