What is with the old school British humor always using rabbits?

Back in like the 60s, 70s & stuff with shows like ‘Goodies’ & ‘Monty Python’, why did a cornucopia of their jokes involve fluffy rabbits (often white)?

Don’t get me wrong, they were used to some good effect but where did this obsession stem from?
